About

The social work with carers resources were developed to support practitioners. Research in Practice worked with carers to develop examples that drew on research and real-life.

About the resources

With carers, we have created eight examples of carers’ situations so that you can reflect on some of the common challenges faced by carers and consider how social workers can support them. Each example contains an audio and a story of how the social worker comes to be involved with a one-page profile and an ecogram. There are questions to prompt reflection.

The professional development section provides a practice overview that highlights the ethics, law and capabilities related to social work with carers, alongside important evidence of good practice. There are also top tips for practice from carers.

The tools section contains blank tools for working with carers and tools to support professional development.

There is also a reading and resources section that signposts you to further learning.

Background

The social work with carers resources were developed in 2015-2016. Alongside an evidence overview, Research in Practice worked with carers to develop examples that drew on research and real-life, and to create tools to support practitioners. You can find more about the original methodology. The resources were updated in 2019 to include additional learning from research and practice.

In 2023, the resources were revised to reflect developments in policy, practice and research, and to make the structure and content easier to use.
